Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Supports Constitutional Amendment Process Concerning the Judicial System: Necessary for the Rule of Law

The Chamber of Industry stated that it considers the constitutional amendment aimed at making the judiciary function more quickly, effectively, and predictably to be important in terms of strengthening the rule of law, improving the investment environment, and ensuring economic confidence.

The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry (KTSO) expressed its support for the process envisaging amendments to four articles of the Constitution related to the judicial system, noting that it finds the changes important and necessary for strengthening the principle of the rule of law and increasing the effectiveness of judicial processes.

In its statement, KTSO noted that the constitutional amendment shared with the public by Supreme Court President Bertan Özerdağ is of vital importance not only for ensuring that the judiciary functions in a fast, effective, accessible, and predictable manner, but also for the healthy functioning of economic life, strengthening the investment environment, and enabling production processes to continue with confidence.

The statement emphasized that prolonged court proceedings, uncertainties, and judicial bottlenecks directly affect industrial, commercial, and investment decisions. It continued: "In this framework, our Chamber considers it to be a correct and responsible approach that the constitutional amendment be focused solely on the judiciary, handled independently of political agendas and election processes through a separate referendum, and prepared as a limited and straightforward package that can be clearly explained to the public."

The statement also noted that the transition to a three-tier judicial system is viewed as a positive step in terms of balancing the workload of higher courts and accelerating decision-making processes. It further emphasized that proposals to update the number of judges, taking into account the growing population and increasing caseload, are important for the sustainability of the system.

The statement concluded: “The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry will continue to support all structural reforms that strengthen the rule of law, institutional stability, and economic confidence. In this context, we respectfully announce to the public that we support the constitutional amendment process aimed at making the judiciary function more effectively and intended to be implemented through broad social consensus.”
